2009 MEMBER OF DISTINCTION GOES TO:
Raymond Shoemaker
… Ray was nominated for this award by his peers. “When Kim Clerkin telephoned me to say that I had been nominated “Member of Distinction,” I was taken back by the news! I was emotional about it to say the least since as it has been my privilege to be a member of this organization since 1983 – time flies! My career in construction started at age 14 laboring during the summer and holidays for C.H.Shoemaker Inc., my father’s (Carl) plastering company. In 1974, my father and brother (Roger) wanted to expand into drywall. I was asked to be a part of the family business and I accepted. This was the start of R&R Partitions. For 25 years, my brother and I partnered in the family business. Over the years there were different companies and name changes such as; R-Tech, Shoemaker & Boyle, and finally Raymond Shoemaker, Inc. In 2000, Roger retired. On December 31, 2008 Raymond Shoemaker, Inc. closed its doors sadly ending the history of our family business. From Carl down to me, we were blessed to have a business that supported and raised three generations of the Shoemaker family. Through it all, though, my involvement and commitment within the association grew. I was elected to the Board of Directors ten years ago making the decision to participate on a variety of committees which included working with IFCA on Educational Programs, Legislative matters and increasing the membership. At the urging of the board members, I accepted the responsibility of Secretary-Treasurer moving on to Vice President and finally representing the association as President. My time at IFCA meant a lot to me! I enjoyed the many working experiences that occurred and when Kim called to say “do you have a minute” I understood that I was getting involved in another industry matter – I was always interested in improving upon our union construction businesses. I have many fond memories of the association and encourage all of the current IFCA members to step up and take an active role within IFCA which will undoubtedly benefit your company and our union partners. In closing, I want to thank my family for their support throughout the years … May GOD bless you ALL!”
